November is Diabetes Awareness Month – Foot Health Tips for Diabetic Care
November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and at Ferro Foot & Ankle, we’re focused on helping patients manage the unique challenges that diabetes can bring to foot health. Diabetes can lead to complications like neuropathy (nerve damage) and poor circulation, which can make it difficult to detect injuries and slow down the healing process. To keep your feet healthy and lower the risk of serious complications, here are some essential tips:
1. Daily Foot Inspections
Check your feet each day for any cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling. These can easily turn into infections if unnoticed. Use a mirror or ask for help if you have trouble seeing the bottoms of your feet.
2. Keep Your Feet Clean and Dry
Wash your feet daily in warm water, being careful not to use hot water. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections, and apply a moisturizing lotion (avoiding the areas between your toes) to help prevent cracks.
3. Wear Proper Footwear
Choose well-fitting shoes that protect your feet, especially if you’re prone to foot ulcers or calluses. Diabetic-friendly shoes and custom orthotics are also excellent options for added support and comfort.
4. Stay Active for Circulation
Physical activity can improve blood flow, essential for healing. Walking and other low-impact activities are great options, but be sure to consult with a podiatrist to find the best exercises for you.
5. Routine Podiatrist Visits
Regular check-ups with a podiatrist are key for early detection of issues. Diabetic foot exams allow us to monitor your foot health and take preventative measures if needed.
